File Storage overview

KakaoCloud's File Storage is a service designed for storing and sharing data between multiple servers and applications using the NFS (Network File System) protocol—a network protocol for remote file sharing and distributed file systems.
You can easily create a shared storage space for collaborative data, and the stored data can be accessed and managed across services and applications composed of multiple servers. This makes it ideal for workloads that require a shared file system.

info

The File Storage service is available as a GA release and supports up to 50 TB of storage per project.

KakaoCloud storage services

Although KakaoCloud's File Storage and Object Storage are both storage solutions, they differ in data structure and intended use:

  • File Storage stores and manages data in the form of "files" and is suitable for collaborative environments and shared file systems. It allows multiple users to read and write to shared files.
  • Object Storage is optimized for storing large-scale and unstructured data in the form of "objects" in the cloud. Unlike File Storage, it does not provide a file system or environment for file sharing and collaboration.

Purposes and use cases

Storing files and data on individual users’ or teams’ local computers can make data management and backup more complex. It may also lead to reduced operational efficiency due to data fragmentation, and raise security and access control challenges—potentially putting critical data at risk.
However, by using KakaoCloud’s File Storage, you can efficiently manage shared data storage, backup, migration, and application workloads. The File Storage service can be used in most IT services that require data storage, management, and migration.

Features

Flexible storage volume operations

  • Simple volume creation and deletion
  • (Coming soon) Adjust volume size freely, and manage data and costs efficiently by setting the volume size based on estimated usage

Intuitive dashboard

  • Easily create and delete volumes from the console
  • View key information about each volume at a glance, including status, creation date, and more

Connectivity across diverse environments

  • Supports connectivity in various configurations
  • When accessible via the same subnet, connections are possible not only from virtual machines (VMs) but also from Kubernetes Engine

Secure data storage

  • Supports full and incremental backup and restore of file storage

Cost efficiency

  • Reduces the cost of purchasing, maintaining, and upgrading physical storage hardware
  • Optimizes costs by allowing on-demand storage scaling
